Voters may decide in May to let St. George, La., to break away from the East Baton Rouge Parish district and form its own school system.

The district is sending out 3,200 notices of possible layoffs, and could eliminate more than 650 central and regional office staff.

If voters approve the May proposal, the money would enable the district to replace 26 existing schools and carry out other facility upgrades.
