Spain's Civil Guard updated the death toll early Monday after the tail end of a train traveling from Malaga to Madrid went off the rails and slammed into an oncoming train.

At least 39 people have died in a train collision in southern Spain and dozens more have been injured in the country's worst rail crash in more than a decade, Spain's Civil Guard has said.

At least 21 people have been killed and authorities have warned the death toll could rise overnight.
